How to play Ordem Paranormal RPG: a beginner's guide

Start playing Ordem Paranormal RPG with a group, the right rules and a character sheet. Learn how to prepare your first session online or in person.

To play Ordem Paranormal RPG, you need a group, someone to be the game master, access to your chosen rules and a character sheet for each player. For an online session, add a voice call and a place to read sheets and roll dice. An elaborate map can wait: a description and an unanswered question are enough to open your first investigation.

This guide takes you from wanting to play to scheduling a session. If you already have a group and need to build a character, use our character creation guide, available in Portuguese. To start with a digital template, open the Ordem Paranormal character sheet on Mini Kraken.

What happens during a session?

One person describes the world, introduces events and plays the people the team encounters. The other participants play their own characters: asking questions, exploring places and deciding how to face danger. When an action needs a rules resolution, the GM explains the test.

The official Ordem Paranormal website introduces a universe created by Rafael Lange, known as Cellbit, built around paranormal investigation. Your own game can start with a disappearance, a strange object or a series of events nobody can explain.

Picture an opening scene: a school caretaker has disappeared, but his radio keeps transmitting from inside a locked room. One player interviews the principal, another examines the door and a third looks for security recordings. The GM responds to these choices and applies tests when needed. Those decisions move the story forward.

1. Agree on the rules before creating characters

Ask the GM which book, version and supplements the campaign accepts. Your sheet needs to match that choice.

| Your group's choice | Where to start | | --- | --- | | First edition of Ordem Paranormal RPG | The Ordem Paranormal sheet and your group's chosen rules | | First edition with additional rules | The same starting point, checking which options and changes the GM allows | | Ordem Paranormal RPG 2 playtest | The Ordem Paranormal II Playtest template and the corresponding test material |

A video may show another version or a campaign-specific adaptation. Write down the reference your group will use and return to it when questions arise. Our RPG 2 automatic sheet guide covers the separate playtest template.

2. Gather a group and schedule a short first session

Choose a date, duration and frequency that everyone can maintain. As a planning suggestion, a first session of two or three hours can be easier to arrange than committing immediately to a long campaign. Leave room to explain the basics and finish a situation.

Decide who will GM. That person prepares the case and consults the rules; players bring characters and a willingness to collaborate. You do not need to perform like an actual-play cast member. Describing an action in ordinary language works: “I want to ask the cleaner when she last saw the caretaker”.

3. Prepare the essentials

Your starting setup can be small:

  • Rules: the material your group adopted, with access to the sections you will consult.
  • Sheets: one character per player, reviewed with the GM.
  • Dice: physical dice or an online dice roller.
  • Notes: names, clues, open questions and resources spent.
  • Communication: a place to meet or a voice call everyone can use.

For official publications and materials, start with Jambô Editora's channels. Check each material's page for format and access conditions. A digital sheet organizes your character; your group still needs the rules for its campaign.

4. Give your character a reason to investigate

Before choosing numbers, write three sentences: who your character is, why they care about this case and what connects them to another team member. This gives the GM something to use and helps everyone enter the adventure together.

For example: “I'm a maintenance technician who knows the school. The caretaker helped me when I started working there. I asked a friend for help because I recognized my own voice in the radio transmission”. You now have a useful skill, a relationship and a question to investigate.

Turn that concept into choices permitted by the rules. For first edition, the Portuguese sheet creation tutorial introduces attributes, classes and resources. Once you finish, use the Ordem Paranormal sheet checklist to review what you will need during play.

5. Check your online setup before the session

For an online Ordem Paranormal game, do a short technical check before opening the story. Everyone should be able to join the call, read their sheet and roll dice. Agree on where shared clues will go and who will keep the case notes.

On Mini Kraken, start with the Ordem Paranormal system page. Create a sheet using the matching template, review its fields and follow your group's chosen campaign setup. If you already have characters in C.R.I.S., consult the Mini Kraken import guide, available in Portuguese.

If you use maps, begin with a simple scene. A readable floor plan and clearly named areas help the team navigate. For clues, the Ordem Paranormal handout guide explains how to adapt documents and photographs.

6. Agree on the experience before investigating

Spend a few minutes discussing the story's tone, themes the group wants to avoid and how to request a pause. Also agree on spoilers, absences and whether the session will be recorded. This gives everyone a clear idea of the game they are joining.

Confirm starting progression, character options and how the GM will handle rules questions during play. Writing a question down to check during a break can preserve the pace, provided everyone understands the temporary ruling.

If everyone is new, create characters together during this conversation. You can establish who is interested in interviewing witnesses, exploring locations and handling physical danger.

7. Play a case with a clear objective and consequences

For a first adventure, offer a concrete objective: find the caretaker, discover the source of the broadcast and decide what to do with it. Give players clues that support a choice of next steps. The GM can prepare reactions without predicting every line of dialogue.

During play, explain what you want to discover and how your character attempts it. Instead of simply asking for a test, say: “I want to compare recording times to find out whether anyone entered after closing”. The GM can then work out what the situation requires.

Our first Ordem Paranormal mission guide provides an original case with locations, clues and possible outcomes. Use that structure to organize the adventure, and choose difficulties and dangers according to your rules and characters.

Questions about playing Ordem Paranormal RPG

Do I need to watch every Cellbit campaign?

You can begin with the premise and context your GM introduces. Your group decides which series events belong to its campaign and what the characters know. If you want to watch the actual plays, use the campaign guide and agree on spoiler boundaries.

Can I play with no RPG experience?

Yes. Tell the group you are new and look for a game willing to teach. Start by learning where your resources are, how common tests work and how to describe actions. Exploring every character option can come later.

Can I play on a phone?

You can use a browser to read your sheet and arrange a voice call your device supports. Test that combination beforehand: switching between audio, documents and a feature-rich tabletop can be awkward on a small screen. Choose tools everyone can comfortably use.

Can I play for free?

You can use free sheet and dice tools, but that does not make every book, adventure or supplement free. Check which official materials your group already has or which content its creators make available. The Mini Kraken dice roller handles rolls without physical dice.

What if I already have a group?

Confirm the rules, schedule the session and create your characters. Open the Ordem Paranormal sheet, review it with the pre-session checklist and bring a question your character wants to answer during the investigation.
